De 1997 à 2005, mon travail consiste à expérimenter sous diverses formes - installation, vidéo, photographie, performance, livre d'artiste... - à partir des notions de partage, de rencontre, de convivialité et de confiance, invitant des personnes d’horizons différents à participer, contribuer et collaborer régulièrement à mes projets artistiques.
Début 2004, je crée avec deux autres artistes le collectif EDS auquel je me consacre presque exclusivement jusqu'en 2013. Notre trio devenu duo en 2008 - avec Didier Thibault - interroge alors sa propre capacité créatrice collective à s'adapter aux différents contextes au sein desquels nous intervenons. Incarnant des personnages volontiers burlesques, nous prélevons et détournons dans le réel des potentiels de fiction que nous formalisons in fine par des installations visuelles et sonores, des vidéos, des performances, etc.
Durant cette même période et jusqu'en 2017, avec les structures associatives d'art contemporain Espace Digital Sporadique et Art4Context, j'organise de nombreuses expositions, résidences, événements artistiques et conférences, et publie des éditions d’artistes sur supports numériques et imprimés : Jean-Baptiste Farkas, Jean-François Courtilat, Carole Douillard, Jean-Marc Savic, Laurent Suchy, Tania Mouraud, Vincent-Victor Jouffe, Stéphanie Nava, Les Frères Ripoulain, Bettina Huschek, Nikolas Fouré, Catherine Rannou...
Fin 2013, je mets un terme au collectif et lance début 2014 un nouveau projet artistique personnel sous le pseudonyme YURI CARDINAL. Par appropriation et détournement de publications sur les réseaux sociaux, mon travail se nourrit d’images et de textes relatifs aux grands enjeux de société actuels : information & médias, numérique & internet, surveillance globale, écologie & géopolitique. En fonction des résidences, des expositions et des interventions que l'on me propose, j'adapte ma démarche et tisse une relation dialogique entre le contexte d'accueil et ma pratique de détournement online, croisant les esthétiques relationnelles et contextuelles de mes débuts et celle, plus récente, de l'art post-internet.
Parallèlement à la création et à la direction artistique, j'interviens également depuis 1997 en milieu scolaire et médico-social et crée depuis 2004 dans le champ des musiques expérimentales et inclassables. En 2023, après trois années très difficiles dues à la pandémie de Covid puis à la crise énergétique liée à la guerre en Ukraine, je ressens le besoin essentiel de remettre du sens dans ma vie professionnelle. Je partage ainsi désormais mon temps entre mon atelier et un collège où j'exerce en qualité d'accompagnant d'élèves en situation de handicap.
A la suite de mon exposition au centre d'art Superflux durant l'été 2025, je décide de mettre un terme à la création numérique pour une raison principalement écologique, mais également en raison d'une certaine lassitude à créer depuis environ vingt-cinq ans devant mon écran d'ordinateur. Commence alors une nouvelle pratique artistique manuelle en associant photomontage d'images prélevées dans des revues, adhésifs et interventions graphiques.
Pour rappel, en 2014, "Yuri Cardinal" n'était pas qu'un nouveau pseudonyme que j'avais imaginé après la fin de l'aventure collective d'EDS. Il s'agissait surtout au départ d'un nouveau projet artistique personnel sous la forme d'un work in progress consistant à expérimenter artistiquement au sein du contexte d'internet. Si mon nouveau projet artistique lié à la pratique du collage n'a plus grand chose à voir avec les 12 années précédentes, hormis le détournement d'images, je conserve néanmoins ce pseudonyme pour l'instant... From 1997 to 2005, my work involved experimenting in various forms (installation, video, photography, performance, artist’s book…) based on meeting, conviviality and trust notions, regularly inviting people from different backgrounds to participate, contribute and collaborate in my art projects.
At the beginning of 2004, I created with two other artists the EDS collective to which I devoted myself almost exclusively until 2013. Our trio who had become a duet in 2008 used to question its own collective creative ability to adapt itself to the different contexts within which we were operating. We both embodyied burlesque characters who took and diverted the fiction potential of reality to formalize through visual and sound installations, videos, performances, etc.
During this same period and until 2017, with the non-profit organizations of contemporary art called Espace Digital Sporadique and Art4Context, I organized numerous exhibitions, residences, art events and conferences, and published editions of artists (like Tania Mouraud, Bettina Huschek, etc.) on digital and printed media.
At the end of 2013, I put an end to the collective and launched in early 2014 a new personal artistic project under the YURI CARDINAL pseudonym. By appropriation and misappropriation of social media posts, my work borrowed images and texts related to the important issues facing society today: information & media, digital & internet, global surveillance, ecology & geopolitics. Depending on the art residences, exhibitions, and interventions that were proposed to me, I adapted my art process and weaved a dialogical relationship between the context of reception and my online misappropriation practice, crossing relational and contextual aesthetics from my beginnings with my more recent post-internet practice.
Alongside creation and artistic direction, I also work in school environment since 1997, and creates experimental and unclassifiable music since 2004. In 2023, after three very difficult years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and then the energy crisis related to the war in Ukraine, I felt the essential need to restore meaning in my professional life. So, I now share my time between my art studio and a secondary school where I help pupils with disabilities.
After my exhibition at the Superflux art center during summer 2025, I have decided to put an end to digital creation, for a ecological reason mainly but also because of some weariness I felt with creating with my computer daily. That is why I have started a new manual art practice by combining photomontage of images taken from magazines and and graphic interventions with adhesives and oil or acrylic paint markers.
As a reminder, in 2014, ‘Yuri Cardinal’ was not just a new pseudonym that I had imagined after the end of the collective adventure of EDS. Initially and mainly, it was a new personal art project that involved experimenting within the internet context. If my current artistic project related to the manual photomontage practice has not much to do with the previous twelve years artwork, the reinterpretation of images apart, I keep the YC alias for now nevertheless...
